First settled by the Algonquian Indians in the early 16th century this farming community eventually was, like many colonial Virginia settlements, Falls Church Virginia begun as a “neighborhood” of large land grant plantations anchored by an Anglican church. That church became known as Falls Church and was on the main trade route that came from Little Falls on the Potomac River. In 1769 a stone church designed by James Wren replaced the wooden original building and it still stands on its original site between S. Washington, E. Broad, and E. Fairfax Streets. Not far from where George Mason and George Washington served as vestrymen in this Anglican Church there is a small road called Little Falls Church Rd. where a civil war era plantation house has recently under gone an extensive renovation and now sports a beautiful standing seam metal roof pre-painted one of the three colors available over 100 years ago, matte black.
