  1. I like the resilience factor to a metal roofing system, as well as the possibility to add solar power also. It would be nice to know whether or not solar is easier to implement when you have a metal roof setup or if the installation cost is the same with shingles etc… Anyway, thank you for taking the time to get this information out there, it was really helpful for people like me looking into energy efficient roofing!

    1. Hi Michael,

This is Paul with Alpha Rain,

Thanks you for you question, I’ll do my best to answer it. There is a lot to consider when referring to a solar system going on a roof. I’m going to just talk about the install and save the orientation factor and if your angle and position of you roof is correct for another discussion. But as for you question, it is a good question, and I will answer it, but first lets look at a solar system install on a asphalt roof. Up until recently I would never recommend a solar install on a traditional shingle roof, composite or Asphalt. The rails that are installed would normally be installed right through the shingle and into the rafter through the roofing deck. Caulk would be applied to the hole that is drilled out with a decent size drill bit. I cannot and never will recommend any roofing or solar install where you drill through the roofing itself and then rely on caulk as complete water and snow protection. This is a bad Idea. Most installed are still done this way on shingled roofs. Now there is a flashing piece made for solar installs on shingled roofs that goes under the shingle and is raised where the solar mounts are installed, and I would say this would be the best install on a shingle roof, but not the best. Now lets talk about metal roofs. There are quite a few different types of metal roofs, but the best and only one I would recommend for a solar install is the standing seam double locked metal roof. The rails are installed to the seams by way of set screws that do not go through the seam, but only snug up to it, without hurting the paint or going through the roof. The whole rail system is installed this way and can be removed or adjusted if need during install or later after the install. Say if you ever wanted to add more solar panels or replace them, or completely remove them. You could do any options without ever hurting the roof. I’ll be honest I have not been impressed with any solar install company that I have come across with how they care for the roof itself. Most that I have seen do not care or even have the knowledge about how to install a solar system without hurting or damaging the roof.

Now to answer your questions, no the install do not cost less between installs, but please look down the road and ask a few questions like how long do I plan to be in this house? and what about when I have to replace the shingle roof? This is the last thing I will leave with you, a shingle roof will have to be replaced in 15 or 20 years. when you have to replace it, you will have to have the entire solar system rails, and all solar panels removed and then reinstalled. The cost for the removal and reinstall will be more than the system is worth. If you had a metal roof you will not have to replace the metal roof, in fact the metal roof will probably outlast the solar system itself.

I hope that helps, Please reply if you have any other questions.
